Cameron Jones

Specialist WordPress Developer

About Me

I am a professional WordPress developer and DevOps engineer based in Victor Harbor. My experience includes building custom websites for clients as well as both free and commercial plugins. Over the last few years I have had the privilege of working with a number of national brands to improve their digital presence in both aspects of web development and SEO.

I am a specialist in designing and building digital products, with my Mongoose Page Plugin being used on more than 30,000 websites worldwide. I have played an instrumental role in introducing improved workflow methodologies and building new services to sell to prospective clients at the various agencies I have worked for.

I am also an experienced public speaker, having presented at a number of conferences and networking events related to WordPress, web design and SEO. I also contribute to the organisation of many of the events I attend and speak at. I was one of the founders of the WordPress Ipswich meetup and was one of the organisers for WordCamp Brisbane 2017.

I also contribute regularly to the online WordPress and web development community. I have made pull requests that have been approved and merged to a number of open source projects including Jetpack, and contributed translations to a number of WordPress plugins. From time to time I also answer questions on Stack Overflow and WordPress Stack Exchange. Away from work related activities, I’m a volunteer and player at mulitple local sporting clubs.

Featured Work

WordCamp Brisbane 2017 View Project

In 2017 I was one of the co-organisers for WordCamp Brisbane, a weekend long conference all about WordPress. One of my primary roles as organiser was to put together the website for the conference. In collaboration with Hannah Malcolm, we designed and developed a unique design that broke new ground for WordCamp sites. The design was so well received that it has been reused for the following two years WordCamp Brisbane has been held.

ScrobYou View Project

ScrobYou is an innovative approach to scrobbling YouTube videos to Last.fm. With no official way of scrobbling from YouTube, users have been forced to rely on browser extensions and manual scrobblers to keep their listening history accurate. Frustrated by the limitations of the available options, I developed ScrobYou. Featuring an in-built video player on top of YouTube’s API and synchronisation between WordPress user accounts and Last.fm profiles, ScrobYou makes it easier than ever to scrobble from YouTube accurately from any device.

Elizabeth JJ’s On The Avenue View Project

During my time at Digital Makers, I was the lead developer on the Elizabeth JJs on the Avenue website. Working closely with our excellent designer, we produced a stylish website highlighted by a number of CSS blending modes and micro-interactions, and along with the abstract design elements transformed a relatively simple brochure site into a work of art.

One of our favourite projects that Cameron was a key part of was the development of the site for www.elizabethjjs.com.au. He brought the designer’s vision to life and the client was over the moon with the high quality result.

Hogs Breath Cafe View Project

During my time at Eightball Media, I was in charge of maintaining the Hogs Breath Cafe website following a redesign and rebrand. The site’s ranking had begun to slide following the redesign and I was tasked with investigating and remedying the situation. Monitoring the site’s search console, analytics and SERP rankings, I audited and optimised the site’s information architecture, fixed broken links and redirects, optimised a large portion of redundant CSS and introduced a number of custom post types and taxonomies to optimise the management of the site content, particularly the restaurant menu. As a result we saw a much faster site and significant gains in search engine rankings.

Cameron was instrumental to the report I was able to deliver to Hogs Breath in an effort to retain them as a client. Without him actively working on this account between his other duties I would not have been able to justify our monthly commitment.

RJR Winter Cricket View Project

The RJR Winter Cricket Cup is the only winter cricket competition on the Gold Coast and the premier winter cricket competition in South East Queensland. In 2020 they approached me to build them a website as they looked to grow the competition. Unfortunately COVID ruled out the 2020 competition, but they returned in 2021 and the website played a pivotal role in getting up and running again, as it was able to replace the clunky MyCricket system to become a central hub for registrations and information.

Victor Harbor Cricket Club View Project

The Victor Harbor Cricket Club embarked on a significant recruitment drive ahead of the 2021/22 season and required a website to help drive new player registrations. I put together a single page website with a custom built theme, which is built to scale as the club grows. One of the main features being an ICS based events calendar, creating a single source of truth for schedules for training, match and social events.
